Editing, editing, editing...

"... pare down to the essentials that you cannot live without looking at. Eliminate to the point that it's getting sparse; better to take away too much and have to add a few things back in. Ask yourself what speaks to you in a clear voice. Do you love it? Just answer yes or no—if you have to qualify it, you don't need it."
- Vicente Wolf in The Wall Street Journal

I have spent the two positively arctic days we've had in the last week finishing a project I began before the holidays - clearing out every closet, cabinet and drawer and weeding the unnecessary from our rooms. Not sure what it says about me, but when so much in life seems out of one's control, I take comfort from order in 'my house.' (That includes the residents and dogs of Church Street being in good order as well.) I'm also finishing up some changes to the living room pictured above that I will share in an upcoming post. Meanwhile, I hope everyone is staying warm and safe!

  1. What an amazing accomplishment, truly. The hardest thing for me to do! Want to visit and give me the push? Just say when :)

  3. I was just about to comment when I saw yours on progress. Yes, I'm planning for 2014 to be all about progress! I'm inspired by all the clearing out you did. It must feel wonderful.

  4. You edit so well. I did clean out a closet and defrost a freezer in this bitter weather, but don't hold a candle to your clean lines. And you know Vicente Wolf talks a good game, but is not always so very spare in his design. Still, it's a good motto and is one of my new year's resolutions - edit!

  5. Beautiful space. It definitely exudes calm and order, but still cozy. Love the texture from the baskets and the rug. I am working on order too; such a slow process(at least for me:-))

  6. Such a beautiful room .. so fresh to start the new year! I'm loving those baskets and the containers and books on the table. I need to do a little editing and you've inspired me!

  8. Phyllis,
This post adds energy to my goal this year of simplifying. I love the simple beauty of your room and look forward to seeing and reading more in future posts. We are having our hardwood floors refinished and have to move everything out...the ideal opportunity to pare down to the "can't live without items" only.
    Stay warm.

    1. Hahaha! When we were in RI over the holidays my step-sister had a dumpster - I made four trips to her house. There is nothing better!

  10. Your living room looks so fresh! Looking forward to seeing more photos. It's supposed to hit 50 degrees in Boston this weekend. I hope the warmer air makes it to your area too.

  11. Funny that this seems to be a theme with so many people I've talked to - clearing out and decluttering and buying less and having it be higher quality, etc. It does feel so good to clear out the unnecessary and I have been doing the same. :)

    P.S. Your room is stunning!

  13. Liking what I see so far Phyllis! I love the feeling of when my house is in order and soon enough my home will feel bare, ALL my decorations are still up Just got home and giving myself a break plus they are pretty to look at) but I am so with you about keeping things clean, simple and orderly..feels great! Happy 2014!

  14. Wolf's quote is equally applicable to the landscape. Not just landscape furnishings, focal points, pots.....plants too.

    Your pic is pure narrative.

  17. I know exactly what you mean! This year seems to be the right time to begin to be ruthless, where things in our house have to earn their place ... instead of keeping so much and living in chaos. It feels great to know that I'm not alone in this.

  20. I am jealous! That room shot is beautiful, but the real envy comes from the fact that you have finished the arduous task of purging. I want to be done with it. I am the same way, I want order in my home when the world is out of order.

  22. I love your living room! This looks beautiful.

I cannot agree with you more, order and a good clean out always makes me feel as if I am in control of something even if the rest of life is spinning out of control.

  23. I am happy to finally be able to comment (google let me back in!), sadly Blogger has kicked me out again:( I did a big purge too and now I have a selection of art/furniture that I will be selling or giving away. It feels so good, almost like we are clearing our heads and making way for our true intentions to come through. Happy New Year!xob
